In 1972 Michael ventured out as a solo performer with songs such as "
Rockin' Robin", "
Ben" and "
Got To Be There".
In 1975 the group had to change their name to "The Jacksons" after leaving Motown and Michael remained with them as the leading songwriter. Producing more dance songs like "Can You Feel It" and "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)" this was leading nicely into the disco fever of the mid seventies and beyond.
In 1979 he released a solo album "
Off The Wall" which sold 20 million copies world-wide. Michael felt this was not good enough and came set about making a bigger impact ........ and this he did with style.
The release of "
Thriller" in 1982 was to set a record for sales that will never again be beaten. Estimates vary but certainly over 50 million copies were sold!
Of course, the sale of music nowadays is done differently with internet downloading and the various formats, but in those days an LP record or cassette tape was the only means of getting hold of the music and it is for those fantastic sales which will not be beat.
Thriller itself had many singles released from it "
Wanna Be Starting Something", "
Billie Jean" and "
Beat It". He linked up with Paul McCartney a few times and released duets with Paul "
The Girl Is Mine" and "Say Say Say" in 1982 and 1983 respectfully.
Michael became the face of Pepsi Cola in 1984 and even suffered second degree burns after an incident while filming the adverts.
Together with Lionel Richie, Michael wrote "We Are The World" in 1985 which was a massive charity single.
In the same year he bought the rights to all the Beatles songs which he had to have - he must have really admired Paul McCartney and the Beatles in general.
In 1987 Michael released "
Bad" which had such classics as "
The Way You Make Me Feel", "
Bad" and "
Dirty Diana" . By this time was set to become a legend in his own right - a truly brilliant performer.
